DESIGN, TECHNOLOGY, MANAGEMENT (DTM)

Welcome to KCACTF Design, Technology, and Management for Region VII. The DTM Expo gives you an opportunity to display your design materials and sharpen your presentational skills in a safe and positive learning environment. This event will provide you with an opportunity to hear feedback from professionals in the industry and learn about all different forms of design. You will also see work from other student designers across the region and absorb new ways to approach design and presentation.

Please Note: In order to qualify to display your work at the DTM Expo, you must have completed the design within the Calendar Year (January to December) prior to the festival.

DTM EXPO HALL SPECIFICS 

Displays

February 2021:  Displays will be virtual, showcased in a website gallery (link will follow)

Students will submit a google slides file or link that includes a 3-minute video introduction to the project and visual slides of their process work and images of the final product.  See Tutorial Video for thoughts on how to create these presentation files and instructions on how to submit them to the DTM.

These standards will be followed when we are not in a virtual Festival format

Typical Year:  

      • The display area is approximately 4′ wide by 4′ tall with table space of 4’ wide by 1’ deep for binders, models, etc. No additional display space will be available in front or on the side of your assigned space.
      • The display area and surfaces available varies slightly each year. Be prepared to adjust your display to fit. Bring your own fasteners (pins, screws, tape, etc.) and other supplies that you might need. Plan as though there will be nothing provided.
      • Each display should include a single concept statement. Make sure that you include the playwright, composer, and lyricist (if applicable) clearly on your display. Please remove or redact your university or college name from all forms, plots, and any other paperwork.
      • Video or audio recording of the response session is will not be permitted. It is recommended that you enlist someone to take notes for you during your response session.

DTM EXPO AWARDS

In February 2021:  Due to the impacts from COVID-19,  ALL PROJECTS will be eligible for National Awards.  Students need only to have completed the project in the calendar year (Jan-Dec) prior to the festival. It does not need to have been produced.  In addition to awards that give students the opportunity to compete at the National Level, there will be additional awards at the Regional Level celebrating:

  • Innovation
  • Collaboration
  • Artistry
  • Story Telling
  • New Technology

These standards will be followed when we are not in a virtual Festival format

National Level

The National Level is for Students with formalized designs that have been realized (meaning fully-produced) in the areas listed below

      • Costume Design
      • Lighting Design
      • Scenic Design
      • Sound Design
      • Stage Management
      • Allied Crafts – areas including (but not limited to) makeup, projection, properties, millinery, masks, tech, wigs, scenic art, draping & tailoring, technical direction, puppets, special effects, costume craft, audio engineering, projection design, etc.

Regional Level

Open to all students that have completed a classroom or unrealized design in the following areas listed below

      • Costume Design
      • Lighting Design
      • Scenic Design
      • Sound Design
      • Stage Management
      • Allied Crafts – areas including (but not limited to) makeup, projection, properties, millinery, masks, tech, wigs, scenic art, draping & tailoring, technical direction, puppets, special effects, costume craft, audio engineering, projection design, etc.

COLLABORATIVE THEATRE CHALLENGE:  POSTPONED TO 2022

An approach to New Play Development through Design

PURPOSE: To raise awareness of the collaborative process in theatre, utilizing new plays as a catalyst for creation and conversation, either through paper design projects, design intensives, or on-site design storm activities at regional festivals. The Collaborative Theatre Challenge in Region 7 pairs a group of student designers with a playwright to visualize a new play for the first time. Their work will be displayed in the design expo at the end of the festival
